Contest for Caleb's Destiny and Some Suspense Thoughts

Contest for Caleb's Destiny

I promised a contest earlier,
but I got too busy and forgot to post it,
so here goes:

For a chance to win a KINDLE COPY
of CALEB'S DESTINY,
you must:

* Join my Fan Page on Facebook here:
if you're already a member, let me know. Great!
and
* Follow me on one of these two sites (or both! Yes!)

I will announce a winner on:
July 29, 2020

***

A Few Suspense Thoughts:
* The reader should see both the antagonist's and the protagonist's viewpoints. This will build on the reader's emotions because he can see the convergence of the two and know that there are perils ahead.

*  Another way to increase the suspense is by using time restraints. Every week, every day, hour, minute counts as the protagonist fights his way to winning.

*  Increase empathy for the protagonist by increasing the stakes for him. It doesn't matter whether it's international or personal, those stakes need to be drastically important to the hero while the antagonist fights to ruin them.

*  Make the reader feel helpless by increasing the pressure on the protagonist. The odds must continually be raised, or faced, to create that suspenseful tension need to keep the readers reading.

*  Bring uncertain, unpredictable happenings, events, and problems into the picture. This can happen for both the protagonist and antagonist, but by using this, you are continually bringing new tension into your writing.

There you have it. A few ideas for your use.
Enjoy!

The Twelve Classic Movies Series from Tamera Kraft

It's great to welcome my dear friend Tamera Kraft back to my blog. Today she's participating in the Twelve Series of Christmas. Be sure to check out her book and links. Here's her list:

12 Classic Movies of Christmas

I love Christmas movies, but some of the sappy stuff on Hallmark is… well, it’s so badly written and acted that even I, the guru of Christmas, can’t bear to watch it. Thank God for Netflix and Turner Classic Movies where I can watch all the great classics. Here are my 12 favorite classic Christmas movies.

12. An American Christmas Carol
Released 1979
Director: Eric Till
Starring Henry Winkler and Dorian Harewood
This retelling of A Christmas Carol set in America’s depression era is really good.

11. Remember the Night
Released 1940
Directed by Mitchell Leisen
Starring Fred MacMurray and Barbara Stanwick
A prosecuting attorney asks for a pretty thief to be let out on bail for Christmas. When the thief is placed in his custody, interesting things occur.

10. The Homecoming: A Christmas Story
Released 1971
Directed by Fielder Cook
Starring Patricia Neil and Richard Thomas
This movie became the pilot of the TV series, The Waltons, and tells of a family during the depression. I remember first watching it when I was around twelve. I wanted to be a writer like John Boy, so I related to him.

9. Santa Claus, The Movie
Released 1985
Director: Jeannot Szwork
Starring David Huddleston and Dudley Moore
The best film that tells the story of Santa Claus.

8. A Christmas Carol
Released 1951
Director: Brian Desmond Hurst
Starring Alastair Sims, Jack Warner, and Kathleen Harrison
There are a couple of newer ones I really like, but when it comes to classic renditions of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, this one is the best.

7. 3 Godfathers
Released 1948
Director: John Ford
Starring John Wayne
A Christmas western where three outlaws must get a baby safely to the cow town of Bethlehem while running from a posse. This is my personal favorite John Wayne movie. One reason I like it so much is because I watched it when I came home with my first child. John Wayne was learning to take care of an infant while I was learning to take care of my son.

6. Home Alone
Released 1990
Director: Chris Columbus
Starring Macauley Culkin
First of many movies about a boy accidentally left home alone at Christmas time. I usually don’t consider movies made in 1990 classics, but this one has become a Christmas classic.

5. White Christmas
Released 1954
Director: Micheal Curtiz
Starring Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye
Best Christmas musical ever made with great singing and dancing features the song, “White Christmas”.

4. A Charlie Brown Christmas
Released 1965
Created by Charles M. Shultz
Animated
This animated classic helps Charlie Brown learn the true meaning of Christmas. The best part is where Linus tells the Christmas story word for word from the Bible and ends with “That’s what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown.”

3. Miracle on 34th Street
Released 1947
Directed by George Seaton
Starring Maureen O’Hara, John Payne, Edmund Gween, and a very young Natalie Wood
This is the best movie made about believing in Santa Clause. It also featured the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

2. A Holiday Affair
Released 1949
Directed by Don Hartman
Starring Janet Leigh and Robert Mitchum
This is the best Christmas love story ever filmed. It’s sad more people don’t know about it.

1. It’s a Wonderful Life
Released 1946
Directed by Frank Capra
Starring James Stewart and Donna Reed
This touching story of an ordinary man who sacrifices his own ambitions for others is my all time favorite Christmas movie.

Announcing a New WWII novel: With Music in Their Hearts

With Music in Their Hearts
Book One of
The Spies of WWII

A historical WWII romantic suspense

Angry at being rejected for military service, Minister Tyrell Walker accepts the call to serve as a civilian spy within his own country. Across the river from Cincinnati, Ohio, a spy working for a foreign country is stealing secret plans for newly developed ammunition to be used in the war. According to his FBI cousin, this spy favors pink stationery giving strong indications that a woman is involved.

He’s instructed to obtain a room in the Rayner Boarding House run by the lovely, spunky red-haired Emma Jaine Rayner. Sparks of jealousy and love fly between them immediately even as they battle suspicions that one or the other is not on the up and up.

While Tyrell searches for the murdering spy who reaches even into the boarding home, Emma Jaine struggles with an annoying renter, a worried father (who could be involved in this spy thing), and two younger sisters who are very different but just as strong willed as she is.

As Tyrell works to keep his double life a secret and locate the traitor, he refuses to believe that Emma Jaine could be involved even when he sees a red-haired woman in the arms of another man. Could the handsome and svelte banker who’s also determined to win Emma Jaine’s hand for marriage, be the dangerous man he’s looking for? Is the trouble-making renter who hassles Emma Jaine serving as a flunky? Worse, is Papa Rayner so worried about his finances and keeping his girls in the style they’re used to, that he’ll stoop to espionage?

Will their love survive the danger and personal issues that arise to hinder the path of true love?

Welcome Tamera Kraft, Our Guest Blogger Today!

It's my pleasure to welcome my dear friend, Tamera Kraft today! Please make sure to check out her debut novel: Soldier's Heart. She will be giving away one digital copy of her book so be sure to comment and leave your email address!

Now on to her post:

Our Thought Life

In my Civil War novella, Soldier’s Heart, Noah Andrews returns home but struggles with the residual after effects of the war. While most of us will never go through an experience as horrific as war, everyone goes through hard times. We, like Noah, need to learn to take control of our thoughts if we want to overcome those tragedies.

2 Corinthians 10:5 We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
Noah used scripture to help himself. There are many times I’ve had to do the same. That can be challenging, but here are a few scriptures we can meditate when going through difficult times. All verses are NKJV unless otherwise stated.

Grief: If we live long enough, we’ll all lose someone we love to death. But we can remember that death is not the end for a Christian. We will see our loved ones again.

John 14:1-4 Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. And where I go you know, and the way you know.”

1 Corinthians 15:54-55 So when this corruptible has put on incorruption, and this mortal has put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written:Death is swallowed up in victory. O Death, where is your sting? O Hades, where is your victory?

John 11:25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live.

Offense: Offense comes to everyone, sometimes because people intend to offend us and sometimes by mistake. But we can’t dwell on that offense. We need to learn to forgive and give the offense to God.

Proverbs 19:11(NIV) A person’s wisdom yields patience;it is to one’s glory to overlook an offense.

Matthew 6:14:15 For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

Tragedy and Trials: Tragedies come in life. Bad things sometimes happen to good people, but here’s some promises we can hold onto in the midst of tragedy.

Psalm 147:3 He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.

Isaiah 43:1-2 Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; You are Mine.  When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; And through the rivers, they shall not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you shall not be burned, nor shall the flame scorch you.

Depression: Some people deal with medical depression and need medical treatment and counseling. But everyone goes through periods of depression and discouragement. Here’s some verses to remember during those times.

Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.

1 Peter 5:7 Cast all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.

Back Cover Blurb:
After returning home from the Civil War, will his soldier’s heart come between them?

Noah Andrews, a soldier with the Ohio Seventh Regiment can’t wait to get home now that his three year enlistment is coming to an end. He plans to start a new life with his young wife. Molly was only sixteen when she married her hero husband. She prayed every day for him to return home safe and take over the burden of running a farm.

But they can’t keep the war from following Noah home. Can they build a life together when his soldier’s heart comes between them?

Soldier’s Heart is available in e-book from Amazon Kindle, Kobo Reader, and Barnes & Noble Nook. It will also be available in paperback in a couple of months.

I'm So Happy to Welcome Sandi Rog on my blog today!

Friends, here is a special message from Sandi's editor. If you don't know her, Sandi's cancer has returned. Her editor is making a special effort to boost her sales (from her book that's just been released) to encourage her. Please read on:

Hey all,

This is Daniel DeGarmo with DeWard Publishing Company.

I'm sure all of you are aware of Sandi Rog's latest battle (with cancer - Type T-cell Lymphoma) that just began last week. As you can imagine, she's devastated, especially considering the timing of all this as her first novel just released last Monday.

Well, considering we are a small publishing company and can pretty much do whatever we want, my business partner and I have agreed to donate an additional $1 per book to a Fund that I'll be setting up this week.

Just so no one thinks we are being shady about the whole deal, this is above and beyond the royalties that Sandi (and her agent) is already incurring with every book sold.

The purpose of this fund is to help out Sandi's family (husband and children) while she is laid up fighting for her life.

What I need from you is simply spread the word. For every copy of "The Master's Wall" that is sold (including Kindle) we will donate $1 to this Fund.

I'll also be setting it up so that it can receive regular donations if anyone is interested in just helping out financially.

I hope to have more information to share in the next day or so but at least for now I would ask that you would do whatever you can do direct people to buy Sandi's book.

Sandi has been copied on this email.....Sandi..Please forward this message on to anyone you think would help us out in getting the word out.

The same goes for you if you've received this email.

I want to close by lifting the following prayer up on Sandi's behalf:

Father, I lift my sister before you as her body has been stricken with disease. You know, O God, that she has used her gifts to glorify You and spread your wonderful message of grace and love. It is my humble plea that you would bring her healing and complete recovery. I know You can do this, You are the Great Physician. Please bring Your Spirit into her home as her husband and children continue to live life without her there. They need You. May all that is done bring You glory as our God and Father. In Jesus' name - AMEN!

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.
Dan

Now, here's Sandi's intervew. Please check out her book.

How long have you known that you were a writer? Did you receive a clear “call?” Or have you just loved writing all your life?

I didn't always want to be a writer. I had other plans. Like becoming an actress or a singer. Once I hit college, I decided acting and singing weren’t for me. But there was always one constant: writing. When I was in fifth grade, I wrote a poem that an adult didn’t believe I wrote. I was shocked by his accusation because I had indeed written the poem all by myself. At the time, I didn’t realize his accusation was a compliment. I also wrote some short stories for a project in Junior High. The teacher thought one of my stories was true and shared with the class how important it is that we “write what we know.” I destroyed her point when I announced that the story was actually fiction. I don’t think she was too happy with me after that. However, by this time I was old enough to see the compliment. In high school, after convincing my mom that the 17 absences I had in English were a computer glitch (I still had an "A"), you'd think I would have realized I had a knack for words and for "telling stories."

Personally, I don't think of myself as a writer. After all, anything non-fiction is like work for me. Really, I see myself as a storyteller. As a kid, I used get excited when Mom told me it was time for bed. I'd dive under the covers and dream up stories. I'd imagine I was a princess running from a castle, but during my escape, thieves would attack. I'd take flight into the woods, but a handsome rogue would take me captive. Of course, he was really a prince disguised as a thief meant to rescue me. That one was always my favorite. Maybe I'll turn it into an story someday.

What a fun childhood you must have had! What is the genre you write in? Would you explain what it is?

I like to say I'm a writer of hysterical—er—I mean, historical fiction. I think “historical fiction” is pretty easily understood. :-) I always have a love story in my novels, but my works don't fall under the romance genre because they don't fit the pattern.

How do you spend your writing days? Do you set goals to reach a certain number of words per day? Can you give us a general idea of how long it takes you to write a novel?

I set goals, but they're not usually daily goals. They're more like monthly goals. Or three month goals. I'll decide to finish a novel by such-and-such date, and well, I do it. Words per day, I don't always keep track of. I just write my fingers off to meet my goal. So far I've met all my goals, but if I'm not focused, I tend to get distracted by networking.

Tell us about your new book. What is the spiritual message in it? What can readers expect to get from reading it?

I'd love to talk about my book. It is my favorite subject, after all. Here's a book jacket description:
THE MASTER'S WALL

He fights for his freedom. She fights for her life. Together, they fight for each other.

After watching Roman soldiers drag his parents away to their death, David, a young Hebrew, is sold and enslaved to serve at a villa outside of Rome. As David trains to become a skilled fighter, he works hard to please his master and hopes to earn his freedom. However, an opportunity to escape tempts him with its whispering call. Freedom beckons, but invisible chains hold him captive to the master's granddaughter, an innocent girl with a fiery spirit. David vows to protect Alethea from his master, the murderous patriarch, and contrives a daring plan—sacrifice his own life to save hers.

The spiritual message is about God working out all things for good for those who love Him. I guess this gives away the fact that there just might be a happy ending for this story. So, if you like happy endings, you're in safe territory here.

How and where can readers buy your book?

Amazon, at:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/search/ref=sr_adv_b/?search-alias=stripbooks&unfiltered=1&field-keywords=&field-author=sandi+rog&field-title=the+master%27s+wall&field-isbn=&field-publisher=&node=&field-p_n_condition-type=&field-feature_browse-bin=&field-binding_browse-bin=&field-subject=&field-language=&field-dateop=&field-datemod=&field-dateyear=&sort=relevanceexprank&Adv-Srch-Books-Submit.x=0&Adv-Srch-Books-Submit.y=0

Do you ever feel like giving up? Most people don’t understand the stress, the work, and the joy of being a writer. How tenuous becoming a writer is. Do you care to share how it feels, what discouraging/encouraging times you’ve gone through? Who’s inspired you the most?

Yes, I've most definitely felt like giving up. But I've found that persistence is the key. Writing the book is half the work. Selling it is the other half. Even though I've been discouraged, I simply couldn't stop writing. I'm passionate about my stories and my characters. They're so much a part of me that I'd have to write them whether I get published or not. I discovered that when I thought I would never see my books in print. I simply had to keep writing despite believing getting published wouldn't happen.

Would you explain how you “chose” (or were chosen by) a publisher? Do you just go “inny, minny, miny, moe?” Grin. Now, that you’re published, can you sit back and relax from the success you’ve experienced?

I discovered my publisher a year ago. I was very attracted to them as a whole and saw a lot of potential in them to be like the larger houses. But they weren't a large house, and on top of that, because they're so small, their books are POD.

I didn't want that, so I checked out the larger houses. But my gut kept telling me I belonged at this press. So, while shopping at the larger houses, I'd ask God to close the doors if He didn't want it there. Well, He closed all the doors! But he closed them carefully. I got a lot of compliments from the larger houses. They liked my story but didn't have a place for it and they'd ask to see more of my work. So, I got rejections, but not discouragement. I now feel confident that I'm where God wanted me all along.

Do you mind telling us some of your likes and dislikes? Hobbies, interests? Where would you like to travel if you could?

I love to write, and I like to write, and I also like to write. Actually, I also love to sing, attend Bible studies, and I love people. If I could travel anywhere in the world, I'd like to go back to Rome and swing by Pompey as well.

Would you give us your blog or webpage so everyone can check it out? Anything else you’d like to share? Promotional information?

Hope to see you there!
Thank you for having me, Carole.

What fun to have Sandi with us today! Hope you've enjoyed it as much as I have.

Blessings!
