Sunday Morning Sunshine: Revival

When Do We Need a Revival?

It is very evident that we need a revival:

When it is easier to stay at home than to go to church.

When it is easier to work than to worship.

When it is easier to be critical than kind.

When it is easier to read fiction than the Bible.

Then it is easier to shirk God-given opportunity than to do it.

When it is easier to support the club than the church.

When it is easier to sleep in church than stay awake.

When it is easier to grumble than to praise.

When it is easier to condemn souls than to pray for their salvation.

when it is easier to hold grudges than to forgive.

Amen?

Amen!

Book Blurb:

Stories and Songs of Faith: My Journey with God is a 52-week devotional that will bless your heart, soothe your soul, encourage your mind, and strengthen your God-given spirit.
Join author Alexis A. Goring on an inspirational journey. Each devotional builds from real-life experiences that impart many faith lessons learned along the way.

Each day is built on the foundation of a Bible verse or edifying quote, followed by Goring's personal story and reflection questions for a personalized experience.

All of the devotionals are tied to a song in order to go a little deeper into the heart of the message. A song directory at the end of the book connects the reader with music online to further enhance the study experience and glorify God.

Spend a year on a journey growing closer to the Lord through Stories and Songs of Faith, and discover personal transformation as time with Jesus Christ changes your heart to look a little more like His.

Let's talk about you and your book, Alexis!
Carole: Is there a story behind your devotional book, Stories and Songs of Faith: My Journey with God?

Alexis: Yes! A testimony, really … I’ve been writing devotionals for publication online since God gave me this devotional writing ministry after going through trauma at age 16. During the recovery process, God took me into His classroom and taught me many lessons that flowed out of me in the form of devotionals. God made a way for me to eventually get paid for my devotional writing, starting after college when I became the Growing Up columnist for a faith-based publication called Collegiate Quarterly. Since then, He’s blessed me with many more opportunities to write devotionals – some paid, some not but all so worth it! Yet even after all these years of devotional writing experience, I never thought of writing a devotional book until last year (January 2019).

Longer story short, when I decided to give this a go, God lined up everything I needed. He gave me wisdom to gather my devotionals that were previously published on blogs where I was a guest (I gathered about 30). He gave me wisdom to reach out to an editor colleague of mine (Dori) who told me that if I wrote 52 devotionals then my book could be a weekly devotional since there are 52 weeks in a year. God moved me to talk to a literary agent (Jevon), months after talking to Dori and not wanting to write more (I had 44 devotionals written by then). God moved me to take Jevon’s advice to “keep going” (until I had written a total of 52 devotionals for my book). I am so glad that I listened to Dori and Jevon because a 52-week devotional is just what I needed to write and according to the feedback I’ve been receiving, it is just what my readers needed too!

God was in every detail of this devotional book-writing journey! He even sent a new editor (Patty) to work for my publisher a few years prior and I learned that Patty has a background in editing devotionals! Patty noticed that all of my devotionals were tied to my paraphrase of Contemporary Christian songs and Gospel music so she suggested the title “Stories and Songs of Faith: My Journey with God” and it fit perfectly!

Music has always been a major part of my life since childhood. And I’ve always loved sharing stories about life lessons learned as I continue on my journey with God. So the title that Patty suggested made perfect sense!

And that is the short version of the “story behind the story” of my devotional book!

Carole: What started you on your writing journey?

Alexis: An impromptu storytelling game led by my grandfather at my grandparents’ house. My Grandpa and Grandma used to babysit my brother and I. One day, while my Grandma was in the kitchen fixing lunch for all of us, my Grandpa said that we’re going to play a storytelling game. He told us to make up a story on the spot. I liked my story so much that writing and “publishing” it became my self-assigned homework that summer. I spent hours on the family computer typing it out. Then I printed it out and illustrated it before binding it like a book with staples and doing the cover design – all while using markers and colored pencils. I enjoyed this “book publishing” experience so much that I knew it was what I wanted to do when I grew up!

Carole: That is so amazing! What fun!

Carole: What fun that must have been! What kind of books do you enjoy reading? (Book recommendations very welcome!)

Alexis: I enjoy reading Contemporary Romance stories and devotionals the most! Here’s a short list of books by my favorite authors that I recommend:

#1: Looks Like Love by Brandy Bruce
#2: Heart’s Design by JoAnn Durgin
#3: With No Reservations by Laurie Tomlinson
#4: Unmasked Heart by Vanessa Riley
#5: Chances Are by Traci Hunter Abramson

Carole: What is your favorite season of the year?

Alexis: I love the Autumn season because the weather is perfect (not too hot or cold but perfectly cool) and the changing colors of the leaves are so beautiful to observe! My favorite features of the Autumn season include but are not limited to: sunny days, a cool breeze that continues throughout the day, caramel apple cider from Starbucks, Autumn Squash Soup from PANERA, wearing my favorite tan boots that my fashion forward mama bought for me, dressing in sweater dresses with leggings (goes well with the boots) and the weather is really good to my hair (that salon-fresh look lasts for weeks)!

Carole: What is a favorite memory from your childhood?

Alexis:
Christmastime with my family members who live nearby.

Carole: What's your favorite meal with family and friends?

Alexis: My most favorite meal with friends is wherever we go to eat good food! It’s the good quality of the food and quality time spent with loved ones that really makes that experience enjoyable! I’ve eaten good food at California Pizza Kitchen and The Cheesecake Factory with my friends. My most favorite meal with family is Christmas dinner! On the menu for Christmas dinner with family includes: turkey cooked and seasoned to perfection, collard greens, seven-layer salad, candied sweet potatoes, sweet potato pie (my Grandma’s recipe was the best), cherry pecan bread, cranberry orange bread, sweet potato casserole with marshmallows, macaroni and cheese, honey wheat bread rolls with butter, cranberry jelly, chicken flavored bread stuffing … oh the food is SO good! Now I cannot wait until this year’s Christmas dinner, God-willing!

Carole: Where do you get the ideas for your books?

Alexis: Everywhere! For the sake of time, I’ll only talk about how I get ideas for my devotionals: God drops ideas into my head then He helps me form lesson points. Such as with a devotional titled, “Taste and See” that was published in this year’s edition of an annual devotional book that my church publishes. The book for this year is called I Am Loved: 365 Devotions for Women by Women.

The idea for “Taste and See” happened as I
was walking through a town center and approached the tea store called Teavana, the words “taste and see” dropped into my head and a Bible verse followed: “Taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.” (Psalm 34:8 KJV).

Next, the devotional started writing itself in my head as I realized that just like the employees of Teavana stand outside of their shop, offering samples of their tea because they want people to “taste and see” that their tea is good … God does the same thing! He doesn’t sell tea. But He does want us to “taste and see” that He is good!

That’s why God gives us opportunity after opportunity to get to know Him.

It’s beautiful.

Thank you so much for sharing a bit about your personal and writing life. Readers, be sure to check out Alexis' newest devotion book! It sounds good, doesn't it?

When You Thought I Wasn't Looking...

When You Thought I Wasn't Looking

When You Thought I Wasn't Looking
You hung my first painting on the refrigerator
And I wanted to paint another.

When You Thought I Wasn't Looking
You fed a stray cat
And I thought it was good to be kind to animals.

When You Thought I Wasn't Looking
You baked a birthday cake just for me
And I knew that little things were special things.

When You Thought I Wasn't Looking
You said a prayer
And I believed there was a God
that I could always talk to.

When You Thought I Wasn't Looking
You kissed me good night
and I felt loved.
ad
When You Thought I Wasn't Looking
I saw tears come from your eyes
And I learned that sometimes things hurt--
But that it's okay to cry.

When You Thought I Wasn't Looking
You smiled
And it made me want to
look that pretty too.

When You Thought I Wasn't Looking
You cared
And I wanted to be everything I could be.

When You Thought I Wasn't Looking
I looked...
And wanted to say thanks
For all those things you did
When you thought I wasn't looking.

Just When I Think I've Lost Confidence In Man's Trustworthiness . . .

Yeah, trusting folks that we are, cautious and prayerful about major decisions, abundantly wary over people who seem scam-ish--we "got taken" this summer.

Normally, we would have pulled away immediately.

Our antennas would have been quivering with suspicions . . .

Why weren't they?

They were.

But I ignored mine for a variety of reasons. It doesn't matter what those reasons were. The big question I had was: WHY?

  • Why did I ignore the warning signs?
  • Was I ignoring God's gentle touch to be careful here?
  • Or was it God's way of getting my attention for an area in my life that was just a bit too unguarded?

What does matter is:

  • I've strengthened my spirit in being more guarded than ever in aimless trusting.
  • I've determined that being a bit more pushy (in a Christ-like manner) can't hurt--at least me. If the other person wants to be offended, after I've listened to that "still small voice" then it's on them.
  • I've learned to be even more careful to follow God's leading, and finally . . .
  • I've learned that I must keep and cherish the promises I've made to God.
It was a hard lesson to learn, but somehow God has seen us through. Since then, I've felt God's presence and comforting touch and his wonderful peace. He's given me a calmness over the whole matter that regardless of the deceit and slyness I should have seen through, we will come through.

Stronger.
Steadier.

Have you ever gone through an experience that, in hinder sight, seemed so foolish? How did you handle it, and how did you come through?

Blessings to you in the awkward moments!

Sunday Morning Peace: Faith of a Mother

During this beautiful month of May
in honor of Mothers . . .
I'd like to offer you
a chance to listen to this lovely song:

My Mother's Faith.

May it bless your heart!

I Cried in Church Sunday

I cried in church Sunday. Hubby was speaking. Talking about battles we face, discouragements that come, hard places to overcome. But he didn't leave us there. He showed us through God's word that we have a heavenly father who will do the fighting, carry us through the discouragements, and lead us every step of our journey.

He talked also about getting older, using our mothers and fathers as examples. And I remembered my mother. She's still alive. Still beautiful. Still desiring to be active even though she is feeble. Softie that I am, I cried remembering the past and how sad it is to think of the future. Of knowing I will lose her. Of never being able to ask her for advice again. Of never going shopping with her again. Of the years gone, oh, so quickly.

Of course, I know I'll see her in heaven. What a comfort.

But I still cry over the earthly loss, I have no doubt, can't be too far away.

Thank you, God, for giving me such a beautiful, caring mother.

I love you,
Mom!

Blessings!

Sunday Morning Peace

Heroes of the Faith by Edgar De Witt Jones

. . . continued from Wednesday's post.

By faith James Madison gave richly of his scholarly mind to form the Federal Constitution.

By faith Andrew Jackson fought the battle of the impoverished and underprivileged many against the privileged few.

By faith Abraham Lincoln bore the awful burden of four purgatorial years seeking to preserve the Federal Union.

By faith he carried a dreadful war to its conclusion without hate in his heart saying, "I have not only suffered for the South, I have suffered with the South."

By faith Woodrow Wilson in the dreadful heartbreak of a world war dreamed a dream of a warless world in which the nations should be leagued together to keep the peace.

By faith he glimpsed that promised land which, like Moses, he might not enter.

And what shall I more say?

For time would fail me if I should tell of that unnumbered host:
the unnamed
and obscure citizens
who bore unimagined burdens
sacrificed in silence
and endured nobly
that a government of the people
for the people
and by the people
might not perish from the earth.

May we never take our freedoms for granted!
Love live the memories of our true American heroes and heroines!
Blessings

BIG News and a Little Bit of Meandering

2012 started out with my determination to become published.

I was already going through a discouragement period, and I felt little change as the months passed. Tidbits of things should have given me a hint that change was in the air. Or maybe better said, in my heart.

Friends encouraged. One special friend figuratively sat me down (although actually we were standing for most of the conversation) and gave me a "talking to." What did I take away from that?

  1. Quit beating myself up.
  2. I have talent; use it
  3. Believe in God
I'll have to admit, my faith was weak at this point. Yet I'll have to admit I think I had to get into this "slough of despond" for God to gain my attention. I had to get to the point where all I could say was, "God, I believe. Help my unbelief."

I put the words on my desktop. Every few days they would catch my attention. Every few days I'd repeat them like a mantra; a prayer from a heart with little faith.

Then a writing conference.
A meeting with an editor.
A manuscript request.
Work. Editing.
A send-in.
Waiting.
Waiting.
More waiting.
Calls from my agent. Emails.
Contact.
BIG News.
I'd been offered a contract.
December 17: date signed.
I became an author!

Elation. Happiness. Satisfaction. Relief.

Yes. All this.
And more.

Peace.
Because throughout this year I learned in my own way to let go and let God. My faith might be weak, but God is strong. My faith might be little, but God works through little and weak and deformed and broken.

I couldn't make it happen, but God did. In his own time.

It's his book, his novel, and whether he blesses it in a mighty way, or a small one, it is his.

Blessings!

Seven Things I Plan to Accomplish

What's in store for me this 2013?
I don't know but I do know I've set a few goals I hope to gain.
Here they are:

1.  Come up with a super marketing plan; something never tried before but guaranteed to sweep my book into the NY Times Best Selling ranks.

If that doesn't work, then come down out of the clouds and work hard at what's been tried and proven.

2.  Come as close to finishing as I possibly can at least two books I'm working on now. It'll take dogged determination. Do I have it?

3. Do all the edits coming up this year in a reasonable but speedy amount of time. A must!

4. Do some serious research on a novel I hope to begin soon. I've been putting this off even though I normally love research. It might help if it was a topic I wanted to study.

5. Check out publishers for our children's books series. Another seemingly endless tunnel. Gotta be done.

6. Improve my blog in looks and content. Since I'm technically challenged this is harder than it looks.

7. Work on increasing my faith in God. Just saying the words doesn't get the job done. Active prayer, Bible reading, and action on my part is required. And sometimes that action is just being quiet and listening.

That's enough for now and quite a list if even half can be reached.

What's your thoughts and goals for this year?
Want to share?

Happy New Year!
Blessings

I STOLE THIS!

Not really. I'm just kidding. I asked my sweet friend Jeannette Levellie if I could use this post today, and she graciously agreed. So-o-o please go check out her wonderful blog at:
http://jeanettelevellie.blogspot.com/

You won't regret it!
Her post touched my heart because so many times I reach out to God wanting an answer to my prayer and when I don't get the answer I want, or worse, no answer, is it because I'm guilty of one or more of the following faith-blockers?  May God help us to trust with a child-like faith, no blocker in our line to heaven!

5 Faith Blockers That Will Hinder Your Faith

Are you asking God to do any favors for you, large or small? Great! I’m standing with you for your miracles and dreams to happen. But did you know that some attitudes and actions will block your faith, making it difficult for you to receive from God? Here are a few heart-condemning faith blockers you want to avoid like a snake with a noisy tail:

1. Strife. I.e.: Arguing, fighting, and gossiping
2. Fear. Also called worry, fretting, agonizing, and anxiety

3. Negative talk. AKA griping, whining, complaining, and fault-finding
4. Worldly pursuits. Nothing sinful about going fishing, catching up with blogs or watching TV, but if they take too big a chunk of our time and heart, they may hinder our faith
5. Too much to do. If we’re burned out, it may be because we are adding things God never asked us to do.

Anything I missed?

Let's get rid of those faith blockers, so we can stand boldly before the throne of grace and ask for help in time of need.

Now, what can I agree with you for God to do in your life today?

LIVE FOR TODAY
FOR TOMORROW MAY NEVER COME

A Lincoln cent

You always hear the usual stories of pennies on the sidewalk being good luck, gifts from angels, etc. This is the first time I've ever heard this twist on the story. Gives you something to think about.

Several years ago, a friend of mine and her husband were invited to spend the weekend at the husband's employer's home. My friend, Arlene, was nervous about the weekend. The boss was very wealthy, with a fine home on the waterway, and cars costing more than her house

The first day and evening went well, and Arlene was delighted to have this rare glimpse into how the very wealthy live. The husband's employer was quite generous as a host, and took them to the finest restaurants. Arlene knew she would never have the opportunity to indulge in this kind of extravagance again, so was enjoying herself immensely.

As the three of them were about to enter an exclusive restaurant that evening, the boss was walking slightly ahead of Arlene and her husband. He stopped suddenly, looking down on the pavement for a long, silent moment.

Arlene wondered if she was supposed to pass him. There was nothing on the ground except a single darkened penny that someone had dropped, and a few cigarette butts Still silent, the man reached down and picked up the penny.

He held it up and smiled, then put it in his pocket as if he had found a great treasure. How absurd! What need did this man have for a single penny? Why would he even take the time to stop and pick it up?

Throughout dinner, the entire scene nagged at her. Finally, she could stand it no longer. She casually mentioned that her daughter once had a coin collection, and asked if the penny he had found had been of some value

A smile crept across the man's face as he reached into his pocket for the penny and held it out for her to see. She had seen many pennies before! What was the point of this?

"Look at it." He said. "Read what it says."

She read the words " United States of America "
"No, not that; read further."
"One cent?"

"No, keep reading."
"In God we Trust?"

"Yes!"

"And?"

"And if I trust in God, the name of God is holy, even on a coin. Whenever I find a coin I see that inscription. It is written on every single United States coin, but we never seem to notice it! God drops a message right in front of me telling me to trust Him? Who am I to pass it by? When I see a coin, I pray, I stop to see if my trust IS in God at that moment. I pick the coin up as a response to God; that I do trust in Him. For a short time, at least, I cherish it as if it were gold. I think it is God's way of starting a conversation with me. Lucky for me, God is patient and pennies are plentiful!”

When I was out shopping today, I found a penny on the sidewalk. I stopped and picked it up, and realized that I had been worrying and fretting in my mind about things I cannot change. I read the words, "In God We Trust," and had to laugh. Yes, God, I get the message.

It seems that I have been finding an inordinate number of pennies in the last few months, but then, pennies are plentiful! And, God is patient . . .

Garden Hints:
TIPS FOR VEGETABLES:
  • Store carrots in ground if they are in well drained soil.
  • By mid-October, or if frost is predicted, pick all tomatoes, whether they are ripe or not. Refrigerate or freeze ripe tomatoes.
  • Wrap green tomatoes or hang the entire plants (with unpicked fruit) upside down. Alternatively these can be stored in a brown paper bag in a cool dark area.
  • In late October cut back asparagus stalk to the ground. Mark the location. Mulch 3 to 4 inches.
  • Prepare vegetable beds for spring and remove all debris.
