My Favorite Things About Autumn by Sharyn Kopf

What fun to have my author friend visiting today! You'll enjoy Sharyn's take on her favorite things about Autumn. Chime in on YOUR favorites too!

1.  My favorite month—Anne of Green Gables said, “I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.” This expresses my feelings exactly! And with my birthday right in the middle of the month—on the 15th—how could I not love it?

2.  My favorite smells—from the apple pie-scented candle I’m breathing in right now to the campfires I’m sure my family will enjoy over the next few weeks, the aromas of autumn stir my spirit and encourage me to breathe deeply. Ahhh.

3.  My favorite clothes—near the end of September I pulled out my bag of slippers in anticipation. Yes, I have a plastic bag full of fluffy, cozy slippers in a variety of colors. Then there are the soft, long-sleeved shirts, the thick, snuggable sweaters and a beloved pair of comfy, pink boyfriend pants—like sweats only better. And cuter.

4.  My favorite food—since Thanksgiving lands into the middle of fall, even if it feels like winter by then, I can include it. And I enjoy the typical Thanksgiving feast of turkey and all the trimmings—plus my family’s tradition of homemade noodles—more than anything. But autumn also includes big pots of chili, S’mores around the campfire and my famous fudge. Yum!

5.  My favorite season—the beginning of fall means the hot, humid days of summer are over and the cool days are just beginning. The trees blanket the earth with an array of bright, warm colors against crisp blue skies. I sleep better and, usually, exercise more. And Christmas is less than three months away. Yay!

Debut Novelist Sharyn Kopf Visiting Today!

Welcome to my dear friend, Sharyn! It's a pleasure to introduce my readers to this author! Check out her books!
When did you first know you were a writer?
I knew I wanted to be a writer when I wrote my first poem at the age of 5. And, for the longest time, that dream meant being a romance novelist. In my 20s, I saw myself becoming the clean, Christian version of Kathleen Turner’s character in Romancing the Stone—enjoying a life of adventure and romance and lots of bestsellers.

So, did you change YOUR mind . . . or what?
Well, things didn’t turn out the way I imagined. (Do they ever?) On October 15, I turned 51 and, though I suppose I’ve had a few mild adventures, I’m still dreaming of true love and being such a popular novelist that even people in the jungles of Columbia have heard of me.

Then, in my 40s, I realized I needed to write about my single heart and broken dreams. When I started writing Spinstered, it was a nonfiction book about grieving singleness. I took the seven stages of grief—denial, disbelief, bargaining, guilt, anger, depression and hope—and applied them to what I was dealing with as a 40-something single woman.

A few years later, while at the Blue Ridge Mountains Christian Writers Conference, a friend encouraged me to focus on my fiction writing. As a result, Spinstered the Novel was born.

Do you feel your are a strong writer? Any particular strengths that show up in your work?
Years ago, I had the privilege to work for the in-house radio marketing department at Focus on the Family. I learned I not only love writing scripts and dialog but I’m pretty good at it. I even won a few awards while I was there. I’m also passionately committed to making my manuscript as good as I can. Though that can also be a detriment because I’m a bit OCD about it, which means I have a hard time letting something I wrote go until it’s perfect. And it’s never perfect.

So are there areas in your writing you need to develop?
Well, to be honest, I don’t write as much as I should. I think it’s a mixture of fear and laziness. Fear that what I write won’t be any good. And the laziness that comes from letting other things distract me from what I know needs to be done. Like spending too much time on Facebook.

How did you come about Indie publishing Spinstered?
That’s a long, sad story but suffice it to say I went through a disappointing contract experience that did not end with a published book. In the meantime, numerous interactions with singles fed the urgency I felt to get this book to the audience I know is out there.

My choice was to start over with submitting to agents or editors—a process that can take years—or self-publish. Since the novel had already gone through several rounds of edits, I knew I could have it ready within a week or two. In fact, I was able to make my goal of taking copies to the Labor Day Singles Retreat at Ridgecrest Conference Center near Asheville, NC. I sold several copies there and made some great connections. It also led to my first 5-star review!

Can you clue us in on what's next for your writing journey?
First, I hope to finish and self-publish the nonfiction version—Spinstered: Surviving Singleness After 40—in the next month or two. In addition, I wrote an unrelated novella titled Cold Read that I’d love to have available by the end of October. Finally, I have two sequels to Spinstered the Novel in the works. Book two will be titled Inconceived and I’ll probably name book 3 Altared. Of course, all of that could change. I’m open to whatever God wants to do!

BOOK BLURB for Spinstered: The Novel
Three friends. Three stories. Three women trying to figure out how they ended up over forty and still single.
Committed to her job and pushing fifty, Catie Delaney has almost given up on her dream of love and marriage. Maybe, she tells herself, she’d be happier just embracing her singleness. Maybe that's been God’s will all along.

For social worker Jolene Woods, on the other hand, being on her own gives her time to pursue her passion—running a halfway house for women just out of prison. The only pothole is her best friend, Trevor, who has silly ideas about them being more than friends.

Then there’s Uli Odell, a graphic designer who’s only a month away from hitting forty. If only she can convince her boyfriend, Cole, to stop messing around and commit already. Desperate not to be a spinster, she guilt-steps her way from one dumb choice to another.

Into this mix of feminine angst walks Brian Kemper -- the latest GWP (Guy With Potential) to join their church’s singles group. But just as something seems about to happen between him and Catie, her world falls apart.

While Catie deals with her unexpected pain, Jolene and Uli face their own struggles.
Three friends. Three stories. Three women looking for hope.

A Warm Welcome to Debut Author Sharyn Kopf

Welcome to Sharyn Kopf, a fellow-writer from here in Ohio, and a friend. Her debut novel is releasing late this month. I asked her to share a bit about her writing journey to publication. Read on . . .

A New Dream
I stood in my friend’s kitchen, watching her stir spaghetti sauce, trying not to cry. The man I’d fallen for wasn’t interested. It was over and my singleness stretched before me like a desert highway.

The first time I met him, I stumbled into a crush like a high schooler. We sat in a circle on a carpeted basement floor with about 20 other singles, playing Catch Phrase, and he made me laugh. And if there’s one thing I find irresistible, it’s a man with a sense of humor and a spark in his eyes that tells me there’s more where that came from.

Over the next few years we became friends and, for a moment, I thought we were moving toward something more. We flirted like teenagers, laughed at inside jokes, winked and smiled at each other, and I touched his arm every chance I got.

Then, just like that, it was over. He wasn’t into me and I was trapped in the emptiness.

“Why?” I asked my friend. “Why can’t I move past this?”

She tilted her head, studying me, as if she wasn’t sure how much I could handle. “You’re grieving something you’ve lost, Sharyn. It’s OK to be sad.”

Isn’t it funny how one moment can change how you look at your life? Well, maybe not ha-ha funny but making-sense-of-the-ridiculous funny. In that one comment, I realized I wasn’t just grieving the end of a relationship I now know never would have worked out, I was grieving the loss of my dreams for marriage and a family of my own.

A few years later, another dream ended—or was, at least, postponed—when I put aside the romance novel I was working on and started a nonfiction book about grieving singleness after 40. Though I fought the nudge to write about what could best be described as my deepest wound, I couldn’t ignore the feeling that not only was this what God had wanted me to write about all along, but that it might be why I’m single in the first place.

So, I started chronicling the pain, slogging my way back toward hope. Words turned into pages that turned into chapters and, eventually, a book was born. It was, I’ve told anyone who asks, cathartic.

After years of working on this manuscript, though, I felt completely wrung dry. The most vulnerable writing of my life and it wasn’t going anywhere. I had to put it aside . . . until the day I took the concept and turned it into a novel, which I submitted to the One Hope Contest with Write Integrity Press.

And won. The prize was a writing contract. When my editor learned the book had started out as nonfiction, she asked to read the proposal, then decided to publish that one too.

Both books—Spinstered: the Novel and Spinstered: Surviving Singleness After 40—will now release through WIP’s sister imprint, Pix-N-Pens Publishing, at the end of the month.

I’ve wanted to be a writer since I was five years old. My dream of publication always involved writing romance . . . until God brushed that dream aside and gave me a new one.

But that doesn’t mean I can’t write a melt-your-heart kissing scene when the situation calls for it.

Sharyn says:
In January this year, I started a new blog with four other writers specifically for single women over 40. If you want to know more about this single journey—and find out when my books will be available—please visit me there at www.girlsnightin40.com.
