Serious Wednesday: In the Grip of God by George Cargill

Welcome, Author George Cargill. He is a new author friend, and I've truly enjoyed reading his interview below. 

What started you on your writing journey?

It was one of the worst days of my life that got me started on the road that ended up with a novel. I began the ministry of the gospel as a middle-aged man in a church that believed in redemption and ignored my past baggage. The people took me in, and I came to love them with all of my heart. Then they made me a pastor and I found my work as God’s servant in His kingdom. It was a shock when, after fifteen years, the Senior Pastor of the church let me go. I thought I would be a pastor there as long as I could walk and talk. I still have the image in my mind of the Pastor telling me it was over. I thought, “I am only sixty-two. It can’t be over.” I wasn’t prepared emotionally or financially for retirement. Bad day. But God and prayer carried me on. 

The Lord took care of all of my needs and provided opportunities and resources for ministry. In 2011 I founded Following the Book Ministries, an international online ministry for the advancement of faith and Biblical knowledge. I continued leading several Bible study groups and preaching from time to time. It was in studying the eighteenth chapter of Acts that I became fascinated with the Apostle Paul’s journey into Corinth. He wrote to the Corinthians, “I came to you in weakness and fear and much trembling.” I think those words were literal. Paul came into that great pagan metropolis alone, beaten down, and out of money. How did he find Aquilla and Priscilla? Who were the people of the household of Stephanas, the first converts in Corinth? Who was that mysterious man Titius Justus? I began writing a story about Paul and the people of Corinth, not just about what he did and the story of the redeemed people of Corinth but about the kind of man who could take on an impossible mission for Jesus. Three years later In the Grip of God: Journey into Corinth was published by Brimstone Fiction. I thank God for His providence and the people He sent to help me.

Which character in your newest release most interested you while you wrote? Why?

Of course, since the novel is about Paul, his character dominates the story. But I became interested in the women Paul mention in his letters. People such as Priscilla, Chole, Junia, Phoebe, Lydia and others whom Paul referred to as deacons, fellow workers and partners in ministry. The one that interested me the most was Priscilla. Her husband was named Aquila and together they were a ministry team of whom Paul said, “…for my life they risked their necks.” Romans 16:4 (NASB) I developed her character in the book as a godly woman who, though small in stature, could courageously break out of the role that the culture imposed on women in the first century.

Why do you write in the genre you do?

Historical fiction, whether the main character is historical or fictional, is the kind of book I like

to read. But I am also interested in the message that is presented in the New Testament by Jesus and His Apostles. I think a ripping good story set in the reality of history is the best vehicle to spread the message of redemption that the world needs.

How much research do you do for each book?

The history and culture of the Jews and of the Greek and Roman Empires in the five hundred years on either side of the time of Jesus has been a long-time interest of mine. I think most of the critical research that I did on the book was in fact-checking my writing. In the Grip of God: Journey into Corinth is not a history book or Scripture but has to be faithful to both to be believable. Solid research is critical when an author is presenting something that is a little different than the conventional understanding of history or the culture in which the character exists.

Share a verse or Scripture passage with us that is special to you.

Romans 8:31. This became one of my favorites when I was in Haiti. I saw this citation without the scripture painted on the top-top taxi trucks that are so colorful and ply the streets of Port-au-Prince. I did not have a Bible with me when I first saw it. Immediately the verse came to my mind, “…And we know that God causes all things to work together for good…” No, I thought, “that is Romans 8:28.” When I got my Bible and looked it up, I began weeping as I thought of all the horrible circumstances and problems of life in Haiti. The Christians in Haiti reply to these things with the inspired words of Paul, “What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us?” (NASB)

In the Grip of God: Journey into Corinth

Alone, beaten down, out of money, and pursued by his enemies, Paul leaves wealth, power, and love to bring the gospel to the great pagan city of Corinth. Facing danger and death, he must

find a way to survive the laws of both the Jews and the Roman Empire itself. Soon, Paul finds himself no longer seeking God’s will but being inexorably carried along by Divine purpose.

Create Wealth: God Has Given You the Power

WHY WORK? GOD’S PERSPECTIVE

“So why do I have to work?” This is a question we may sometimes ask, especially when we don’t feel like working. According to an old saying, work is never complete. Yes, something always needs to be done, whether at home, in our business or place of employment, even when we’re on vacation. Work is a very necessary part of life because it is part of who God is. We are created in His image, and like Him we are workers.

Work Is for God and Honors God

Bondservants, be obedient to those who are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in sincerity of heart, as to Christ; not with eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but as bondservants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart, with goodwill doing service, as to the Lord, and not to men, knowing that whatever good anyone does, he will receive the same from the Lord, whether he is a slave or free. —Ephesians 6:5–8

Whether we are employees, those who are self-employed, business owners, or investors, our work should honor God. The main focus of our work should be to please God, not men, and to work knowing God is present with us at all times. Why? Because the Lord rewards the work we do and how we do it.

We are sometimes unaware of things we do that displease God. We sometimes steal time—we’re tardy to work or fail to adhere to the contract we agreed to. Sometimes we fail to give our best and provide disappointing results, then we wonder why we didn’t get the promotion we wanted.

Whatever we do in life should be pleasing to God. Daily we should ask God to give us the ability to do our work well and let it honor Him. Joseph was a great example of one who honored God in his work. Even as a slave, his superiors saw that God was with him and blessed everything he did. Joseph had the spirit of excellence upon him, and others saw this at each stage of his life. Regardless of what they believe, people should be able to see that same spirit of excellence in us and be willing to trust and favor us.

Whether at work or in relaxation, our lives as Christians should honor God.

Colossians 3:17 says, “And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.” No disconnect should exist between you, your work, and God. God is interested in all of you. The thought that your work is separate from your relationship with God dishonors Him. The attitude that your strength and wisdom, not God, are what provide for you also dishonors Him.

Any credit, any good in our lives, is from the Lord; we therefore need to guard against pride that rises up in our hearts when we achieve success and prosperity through our work. God, who cares for us, is the One who gives us the ability to create wealth.

Work Is God’s Assignment to Us

Work was part and parcel of ruling over the earth, and every assignment God gave Adam required work (Gen. 1:26-28; 2:19; Ps. 8:4-8). Likewise every assignment or task given to all who follow after Adam, including us, requires work.

Work is an essential part of who we are. Work is necessary to living out God’s will for our lives. Building the ark God used to keep Noah, his family and the animals safe took work. Noah worked to build it. Gifted in administration and endowed with a big dream, Joseph had to work. Moses’s assignment to deliver Israel required work. To lead the children of Israel into the Promised Land required effort on Joshua’s part to be an effective leader. Jesus came to do the work Father God had sent Him to do—to preach the gospel to the poor, to heal the broken hearted, to declare freedom to the captives, and to open the eyes of the blind. It all required work. Every assignment God gave them was the fulfillment of His purpose for their lives. Their willingness to do the work brought blessings to them and others.

Your assignment from God may not be as grand as those mentioned above, but it will still require work for successful completion. You may be a father or mother who provides for your household. You may be a teacher responsible for educating the future generation. Maybe you’re in the corporate world, providing products and services locally or to the world at large. Whatever your assignment is, it will require work. Spiritual, mental, and physical effort will be required to complete whatever assignment you have in life.

We often fail to see the blessing of work because the effort, sweat, or toil of it blinds us. Some think work is a punishment or curse from God, rather than a gift from God to be enjoyed (Eccl. 5:18–19). Once we are sure God wants us to work where we are, we should accept the gift, take it seriously, and do the work that pleases Him.

Work Leads to Wealth Distribution

Work is the means through which we create wealth, and wealth creation leads to wealth distribution. In biblical terms, God gives us the power to create wealth so we can be blessed and be a blessing to others. Therefore all the wealth we create is not for us alone, but for others. The promise God made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob has passed to us through Jesus Christ. We, the seed of Abraham, are blessed and are to bless.

God’s covenant is reciprocal (Gen. 12:1–2; Deut. 8:18) in that God has blessed us to be wealth creators, and through this God empowers us to be wealth distributors. But what does wealth distribution mean or involve? As wealth distributors, we take some of the wealth we have created and give or lend it to others, either through our education, gifts, skills, or money. God wants us to take every blessing He has given to us and use it to bless others. As wealth distributors, God empowers us to do the following:

Support church ministry. Paul instructed the Corinthians to set aside money weekly to give toward their sister church’s needs. He also applauded the church at Philippi for generous giving. You can support some area of your church’s ministry, such as an outreach program, youth ministry, food bank, or some other aspect of the work as God directs you.

 Send out missionaries. Although giving toward missions may be seen as part of church ministry support, it is a very special aspect of it. While we can’t go to certain places, our money can support those who are willing to go into the remote parts of the world to preach the gospel. This can be one of our contributions to reaching the lost for Christ.

Give to other charitable or worthy causes. The world has many needs, and we are an extension of God’s hands and an expression of His love to this suffering world. When we distribute wealth to sponsor a child, giving them much-needed food, clothing, and shelter, we show God’s love. When disaster strikes, we can be the first on hand to help by providing clothing, medication, water, and whatever is called for. Also in our own country we can contribute to a children’s hospital and donate to cancer research.

Through this wealth distribution we affect the lives of others, whether they belong to the household of faith or not. Our work as wealth distributors will cause others to see the light and give praises to God (Matt. 5:16). Also when they see God’s blessing on our lives, they will want to come with us into our Father’s house (Is. 55:5; Zec. 8:23). Our wealth creation and distribution will be a witness of God’s goodness and greatness.

We can give out of what we have; from the financial reward we gain from our work, God expects us to give to support the needs of others. The church at Macedonia helped sister churches in need through giving from their substance (2 Cor. 8:1–4). In Ephesians 4:28, Paul clearly points out that the one who is able to work and create wealth is in a good position to give to those in need.

Not only does our creating wealth have a positive impact on society, but the actual work is also a means of wealth distribution. The daily work we perform touches people’s lives through products created or services rendered. For example, a doctor aids in healing the sick, a money manager helps people keep their finances in order, and a factory worker creates products bought by customers who need them. Our work and wealth are all part of the wealth creation and distribution process. We should use what we have to be a blessing to others.

Saved by a Home Study Paper!:

God had always put extraordinary people in my life to accomplish His sovereign purposes. A couple of days before leaving, as I was packing my six sets of documents, I called the Immigration and Naturalization Service in Miami, Florida, to see if they had received my dossier.

“You must be psychic,” the woman on the other end of the phone said. “Your packet was just placed in front of me.”

“No, I am not psychic. I am a Christian and I think God wants me to adopt this little girl.” She wasn’t sure what to say to that, so she continued to go through a list of things.

“I don’t see your home study,” she said.

“They never gave it to me,” I told her. “It was mailed by the adoption agency that did my home study, to the adoption agency in the Midwest that was coordinating the Nepali side of things.”

“You must have that document,” she insisted. “I will overnight a copy of it to you and make sure you take it with you.”

The next day, the home study arrived by Fed Ex, and I made a copy and packed it in my suitcase. Neither adoption agency made sure I had it. A lady from the INS gave it to me overnight by Federal Express.

I could not have adopted Manisha without the home study in my possession.

After dinner and having returned to the Bleu Hotel, I climbed the three flights of stairs to my room and filled out a couple of faxes to let people know I had arrived safely. This was back in the prehistoric days before email. I walked down the stairs again to hand the papers to the receptionist. As I waited for him to finish sending the fax, another Canadian man whom I had not met earlier walked up and gave me one of those looks that makes a woman feel uncomfortable.

I tried to turn away from him, but he persisted, “Why don’t you come up to my room tonight...”

I thought I would be nauseous. The last thing I wanted to do was spend an evening with some guy I didn’t know. I tried to explain to him I was adopting a little girl, but he had no interest in hearing about that.

I quickly finished my business with the attendant and once again climbed up the three flights of stairs making sure he didn’t follow.

Ankit later told me, “You know the wickedness of man. Man is even more wicked here.” I had no reason to doubt him. More than once while in Nepal, I felt an evilness that I associated with Hinduism. It was like a coffin being lowered into the ground, a veil covering the truth, the darkness of a bottomless pit full of people with no hope.

I Married an Idiot by Elaine W. Miller

Wow. What a wonderful, heart-touching devotional book.

I loved the title the first time I heard it. And now that I’ve read the book, I can’t say enough good about it. The ten valid reasons men and women can change about his/her marriage are thought-provoking. Every chapter was easy to read, understand and practical and was priceless with down-to-earth illustrations, some funny and many sad, but all real in today’s world. Every meditation was filled with appropriate scripture. Every reflection was icing on the chapter cakes, the added touch to bring home the truth. Each prayer rich with pleadings a sincere heart can pour out to God. And the suggestions in the Change sections? Brings to mind the words: Go forth and be fruitful. Powerful acts that can and will create results.

I highly recommend this book for ALL marriages. It’s never to late to fall in love again. It’s never too early to determine to keep that love preeminent in a new marriage. By all means buy this book. By all means share with your family and friends.

The Cuban Christian Writer: Redemption, Encouragement, and Restoration Stories by Roberto Ornan Roche
This is a book of heart-touching stories and devotional-type writings filled with truth and love and scriptural behaviors for which every Christian should strive.

Some of my favorites include:

Sand in My Eyes: admonished us to live a godly life. Don’t ignore the warnings about free thinking and living without regard, a careless and self-centered existence. The end comes too quickly and afterwards we must meet a loving God who is also a just one.

The Friendship’s Secret: A joke conceived by one man upon his best friend is carried throughout a life time. In the end of these two lives who was the winner? A truly wonderful story with a well, thought out ending.

The Last Sheep: What a marvelous encouragement to all Christians who yearn for a loved one and/or family member who has not yet returned to Christ! My heart was touched to not give up hope, but continue with words of gentleness and hope to those yet lost for is not Christ’s longing for that one much greater than our own?

Family/Small Group Discussion Guide -Season 1

I do not love hunting, duck calls or mud on my butt! I do, however, love Duck Dynasty and the Robertson family.

I first learned of Duck Dynasty while watching the previews before The Hunger Games movie. After the movie I went home and set my DVR to record the new reality show. I’m not much of a reality show fan but I love humor and I love the Lord. I knew this was going to be an absolutely hilarious, wholesome show that my whole family could watch together. I’ve never been more right about anything! And I’ve never wanted to write more about anything! The life lessons the Robertson’s cleverly share on A&E television are what so many families and churches are desiring.

I can not say that I have met the Robertson family. Nor can I say that I have received any endorsements from them. I’m praying that A&E and/or the Robertson family will one day express interest in this study and will contact me. Until that day my agent is waiting to hear from a publisher that may print the Kindle version of my book. That will be a glorious day!

Duck Dynasty - Hunting for Spiritual Truths was launched on Amazon on March 29, 2013 in the Kindle Store. Everything I learned about publishing an eBook, I learned from author, Jeff Goins at http://goinswriter.com. It wasn’t a particularly difficult process and it was cost efficient. On average from beginning to end an author may spend approximately $500.00 for cover design and Kindle format conversion. I have currently moved over 1,300 eBooks. It has been greatly accepted and I am thrilled with the feedback to date.

The Lord instilled in me a passion to write about Duck Dynasty and gave me the strength to see it to completion. I pray God will use this small group/family study guide to further His kingdom and all glory be to Him.

A Letter to a Teacher by Author Cleo Lampos

Have you ever written a letter to a teacher who made an impact on your life? I have.

Several years ago, while attending a family reunion, one of my cousins shared that Mae Erie, my second and third grade teacher, asked about “those Meiners girls.” Many months later, my sister found Mrs. Erie on the internet, and I composed a letter of thanks to her for being the firm and fair teacher in a one-room country school in Iowa. The letter described my love of books, for Mrs. Erie read aloud to the class every day. Uncle Tom’s Cabin, by Harriet Beecher Stowe, changed many of my attitudes as a second grader.. Mornings started with the Lord’s Prayer, the Pledge to the Flag, and recitations of both the Preamble to the Constitution and the Gettysburg Address, giving a moral foundation to the entire school. Most of all, Mrs. Erie treated each student with respect and great expectations.

In the cases of my older sister and me, Mrs. Erie’s belief in our abilities became critical to our later success in life. Our father had died when we were preschoolers, and our mother married a man who drank excessively. We lived in an uninsulated chicken house with no running water. Mrs. Erie gave us winter coats so the two-mile walk in Iowa winter weather could be tolerable. She told us that we were creative and smart.

My letter arrived a bit late for Mae Erie. Her daughter took the mail to the nursing home where she lived in the dementia ward. The entire staff heard the letter and posted it on the bulletin board so all visitors could read of the beloved teacher. Mrs. Erie’s daughter wrote back that during all the years that Mae was lucid, she prayed for “those Meiners girls”. She would have been proud to know that we both have Masters Degrees and have taught in the field of Special Education. Mae Erie’s prayers were answered because God did watch over two girls in difficult circumstances.

Have you ever written a letter to a teacher? I wish I had done so sooner.

　

Cleo Lampos attended eight schools in three states before graduating from Fort Atkinson High School in Wisconsin. She earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, and a Master’s in Education from St. Xavier University in Chicago. For twenty-six years, she taught in a district described as “an urban school in a suburban setting.” From her experiences as a teacher in both the regular education and special education classrooms, she has written a devotional book for teachers. Welcome, Zeke Lam

I'm happy to have Zeke on my blog this week!

Zeke, how long have you known that you were a writer? Did you receive a clear “call?” Or have you just loved writing all your life?

I have always enjoyed writing, but it mostly took place in relation to schooling assignments or sermon preparation. In regards to writing a book, I did receive a clear call from the Lord to write concerning Biblical submission. Honestly, I never saw it coming! With that being said, I am greatly anticipating writing much more in the future.


Well, it sounds very interesting, and I'm glad the Lord laid it upon your heart to write. What is the genre you write in? Would you explain what it is?

I am a Christian non-fiction writer. Most of my work concerns discipleship and Christian growth/ development.


How do you spend your writing days? Do you set goals to reach a certain number of words per day? Can you give us a general idea of how long it takes you to write a novel?

Trying to juggle family, work, and ministry has been a nice challenge. I usually try to write in blocks of quiet time. This usually takes place in early morning hours or during my children’s nap time. SUBMISSION actually took a little less than one month to write. Of course the editing process added to that, but the actual book came together fast.

Sounds as if you've handled it well. You recently had a book published. Would you take this time to describe it to us? How and where can readers buy your books?

Working with Burning Lamp Media and Publishing was a true privilege. From editing to cover design, they were very accommodating to me as a first time writer. We are currently working on the marketing aspects of the book. Although we plan to offer them in bookstores nationwide, SUBMISSION is currently only available on Amazon and at our website: www.submissionministries.org

Good! What is the spiritual message in your book? What can readers expect to get from reading it?

My prayer is that each reader will walk away with the desire to submit every area of their lives to Jesus. Often times in the Christian faith, people have a tendency to plateau. I have been guilty of this, and found it to be due to the fact that there were areas in which I refused to let go. Hopefully upon reading this book, brothers and sisters worldwide will surrender like never before and position themselves for revival and spiritual greatness.

I'm really interested in reading it myself. Do you ever feel like giving up? Most people don’t understand the stress, the work, and the joy of being a writer. How tenuous becoming a writer is. Do you care to share how it feels, what discouraging/encouraging times you’ve gone through?

Discouragement is a popular tool of the enemy as he would love to see Christian writers give up. When discouraging moments emerge, I make a conscious effort to step away and seek the voice of Jesus. Amidst the business, it is easy to lose focus on our primary purpose: intimacy with Jesus our Savior. This occurred in my life to the extent that I decided to move my family away from our home simply to seek to heart of Jesus. My wife and I and our two baby boys took a journey that changed our lives. We set aside all the distractions just to have time with our Lord. Actually, it was during this three month getaway that the Lord asked me to pen SUBMISSION!

If only we all would do this! Who’s inspired you the most?

My pastors and my wife have been great inspirations to me as a writer, minister, and leader.

Would you explain how you “chose” (or were chosen by) a publisher? Do you just go “inny, minny, miny, moe?” Now, that you’re published, can you sit back and relax from the success you’ve experienced?

God truly orchestrated and directed my relationship with Burning Lamp. Upon completing the manuscript, I began to research different Christian publishing houses. Days before I was to sign with a company, I shared through a phone conversation with Founder Brian Hume about what the Lord was doing with my life. I told him about the book and he shared with me about the beginning stages of Burning Lamp. Despite the fact that our phone conversations usually consisted of us praying about other ministry possibilities, it was obvious that God had placed us together in this moment for this task. Because I am the first author for Burning Lamp, I had no other feedback to consider. Looking back on it, had it not been for the up close and personal feel of Burning Lamp, I may not have even followed through with the process. It is nice to be published, but I would not describe it as relaxing based on the fact that I constantly have a stirring to write more. As for finding a publisher I can relax, but it terms of what God has next, I remain in a state of expectation.

Do you mind telling us some of your likes and dislikes? Hobbies, interests? Where would you like to travel if you could?

I love to work with my hands and actually operate a small ornamental concrete business. I construct various objects such as bird baths, benches, flower pots, etc. My family and I enjoy missions work and we have traveled extensively. We love outdoor activities and sports. If I could travel anywhere, I would choose Italy. My wife would greatly enjoy a trip like that. My main interests involve being a Godly husband, father, and pastor and living each day with joy and appreciation for what God has blessed me with.

How long have you known that you were a writer? Did you receive a clear “call?” Or have you just loved writing all your life?

Carole, I did not feel a ‘call’ to write, but have loved reading ever since I can remember. I had read nearly every book in the library by the time I finished elementary. The desire to write was probably born in that school library and I scribbled in diaries, wrote poems, prayers and articles for many years. Even won a contest or two.

I can say my real passion to write hinges on two historical events in my life.

The first. My adult daughter was driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol, had a car wreck in which her little six- year-old son was killed and she suffered a life-threatening traumatic brain injury. After a long, dark period of time, the Lord led us to tell her story in book form as a means of healing and testimony of God’s mercy and redemption and the absolute miracle of her recovery. Writing that book was one of the hardest things I have done, yet one of the most rewarding.

Of course, that book was nonfiction, but from there I continued my fiction efforts, but, to be honest, with minimum success. I thought I had forever to perfect my writing, when my second hinge of history occurred. After a routine exam, I received the diagnosis of thyroid cancer. The lab report had to be pushed in front of my nose and my doctor’s nose to make us believers.

From there, I rearranged my life to include writing fiction.

Oh, my. You are a brave woman, Jude. What is the genre you write in? Would you explain what it is?

I continue to write inspirational nonfiction. That is just a part of me. For the past year I have written an inspirational column for Maximum Living, a magazine with focus on spirituality and wellness. But most of my time is spent writing fiction. I like to say I write women’s fiction with inspirational romance elements. Women’s fiction to me is the story of a woman’s journey, which may or may not include romance. I just like to include romance. What’s life without romance?

Too true! How do you spend your writing days? Do you set goals to reach a certain number of words per day? Can you give us a general idea of how long it takes you to write a novel?

Ugh! Some days not as well as I’d like. My laptop is on my dining room table (sigh, can I covet Deb Raney’s fabulous office?) and the beautiful scene of nature outside my windows pulls me astray far too often. BUT, my goal is to reach my ergonomic chair in front of my laptop by 9:00 am. I’m a fairly early riser and get everything done first, even dinner planned. From there I GO! If I get 2-3 hours of pure writing in, I am satisfied. As you know, there’s a lot more to this business than making words. Liz Curtis Higgs has certain days she does administration, marketing and writing. I wanna be like her! But we all have the same 24 hours in a day. It’s just how we use them.

My first novel took about two years to write, but I did not apply myself diligently. My author friend JoAnn Durgin is gifted and can craft a zillion words by noon. I’m lucky to get a 1000. I’m too lean and she says my words are too big.

My second novel took about a year interspersed with work, volunteering, church, and family. You know the drill don’t you? My third one must be done quicker. I have a deadline of eight months. We do get better and faster. But I’ll never be real fast.

I love days when I get lots of writing done! Tell us about your new book. What is the spiritual message in it? What can readers expect to get from reading it? How and where can readers buy your book?

The title is Joy Restored. It is about a young, widowed mother who is healed in broken places. She blames God for the death of her disturbed, Vietnam vet husband and in the process almost misses the incredible love offered by a rich, Christian widower.

The message is timeless. God is still there through our darkest times. My heroine finds that with God tragedy can turn to triumph. Readers can expect delightful characters and a wonderful love story.

Joy Restored is being published by Desert Breeze Publishing and will be available in electronic form in November. It will be carried by Desert Breeze, Amazon, Barnes and Noble and other electronic venues. It is book one of the Chanute Crossings Chronicles and book two will be out June 2012. My mother's 1930's sweet love story with the same setting will be a free bonus download with my book.

Carole, I have emotionally quit several times, but never literally. Once, the rejections from my so-desired Christian Publishers were so not forthcoming, I decided to take the Christian out of my story. At my next agent meeting (with an agent I really, really wanted) she asked, “Where’s the faith element?” I was terribly humbled and had no cogent reply. A strong faith element has been there since and always will be. No matter the number of rejections.

Who’s inspired you the most?

This is not hard to answer. I think real heroes are missing today, but I’m always on the look out. In short and in hindsight, I’d say my mother was and has been my biggest inspiration by far. Simply by her life.

I called my first publisher because author submission guidelines were missing from their web site. One thing let to another and she asked for a proposal. A God thing.

The second publisher had a request for submissions on our ACFW Loop and I answered. And she answered. It's very important though to study publishers to whom you submit. Make sure the house fits your genre and subject.

Now, that you’re published, can you sit back and relax from the success you’ve experienced?

Come on, Carole! Though that does happen (think JK Rowling), it isn’t often. I’m just thankful for what small success I have had. It means a lot to me for many reasons.

LOL. Well, I have to ask, don't I? Do you mind telling us some of your likes and dislikes? Hobbies, interests? Where would you like to travel if you could?

I hardly dislike anything and have far too many likes! That’s why I get distracted from writing.

• I love nature and love to travel.
• Biking and walking suit me just fine.
• Love jazz and classical music.
• Have just learned to knit and am learning to play the piano.
• Am fascinated with genealogy.

• After God, my passions are people and places.
• My college minor was anthropology and I’ve always enjoyed other cultures.
• I’ve been blessed, in my nursing career and otherwise, to travel to quite a few places in the world and this has given me a broader understanding of mankind. I’ve always wanted to see Siberia. Instead, God gave me a wonderful Russian neighbor and I read The Long Walk. Now I don’t want to see Siberia so much.

I have a fun blog and very, very soon will have a nice web site done by Jason Walker, whom some of you use. I do all the social network things also, but to be honest, I’d rather be playing Uno with my grandkids. However, those things are important and as writers, we must do them.

Don’t write a book unless you are willing to market it and plan to spend about 2 years doing that. Create a local, state and national marketing plan. Be brazen.

How long have you known that you were a writer? Did you receive a clear “call?” or have you just loved writing all your life?

Good question. God called me to be a writer when I was in elementary school. Later, in high school, I won a poetry writing contest in a literary magazine which prompted me to major in Creative Writing in university. The Lord kept nudging me forward in this pathway. I’ve just never looked back.

What genre do you write in? (Would you explain what it is?)

I’ve written fiction, non-fiction, devotionals, screenplays and poetry. Right now I’m focused on poetry and fiction. I also like blogging on my “Fresh Air” blog that offers help and encouragement.

Can you describe your writing process for a poem?

Sure; It usually starts with a spiritual insight, inspiration or phrase. I pray for wisdom and direction, asking God to anoint my words and make His truth fresh and understandable. I want readers to experience His love so they’ll choose to further trust Him.

Can you give us a general idea of how long it takes you to write a book?

Always longer than I’d like. I’m embarrassed to tell you how many hours I worked on each poem for “A Friend in the Storm.” I kept reworking them because I’m a bit of a perfectionist. I also wanted each poem to fit with its corresponding quote and Scripture so everything would flow together.

I spent many months hunting for memorable quotes and Scriptures. I started the book in 2005 and I didn’t stop editing until it went to press, if that gives you a hint.

Do you ever feel like giving up? Most people don’t understand the stress, the work, and the joy of being a writer. How tenuous becoming a writer is. Do you care to share how it feels, what discouraging/encouraging times you’ve gone through? Who has inspired you the most?

I couldn’t quit because I don’t know what else I would do. Writing’s what I love.

Writing and sharing my faith.

Yeah, it’s discouraging at times. Not everybody gives you a rave review; and if you’re sensitive like me, that can cut. Bestselling author, Gary Thomas, who endorsed my book, recently reminded me of something that helps me keep things in perspective. I’m writing for an audience of One: Christ. That truth tames my discouragement.

Who inspires me most? Billy Graham. He’s not into what others think or say about Him. He’s out to please the King of kings. That’s the kind of evangelist I want to be.

Zondervan was always my top choice, so I’m super blessed to work with them.

When I’m not writing and marketing, I like listening to sermons, watercolor painting and reading Christian books. I also like spending time with my family, biking, swimming, and, of course, eating out!

Where would I like to travel? Paris France. I’m originally from Canada so I speak a little French. I think I’d like to practice in the Eiffel Tower and a few romantic places! I’d bring my husband of course!

Tell us about A Friend in the Storm. What prompted you to write it?

I started writing poetry for a friend dying of cancer. When she asked me to visit her, I didn’t know what I’d say until God reminded me that I could write her a poem. It just took off from there. She wanted more!

After fulfilling her wish of reading them at her funeral, several people encouraged me to turn my poetry into a gift book.

I researched grief and gift books and I realized I wanted not only to speak to the heart (through poetry), but I also wanted to speak to the mind and the spirit ~ so I included quotes and Scripture.

I wanted to address the difficult question: “Why would a loving God let this terrible thing happen?” To do this best, I wrote most of my poetry from Christ’s perspective. He’s the only One who can truly say, “I’ve been there. I understand.” A Friend in the Storm isn’t just a unique conversation; it’s an innovative way to share God’s comfort and help people find lasting hope.
