Serious Wednesday: Behind the Scenes

Behind the Scene with Secondary Characters

Boet

Creating characters for our books is extremely important, immeasurably valuable. Without the right character creations, a book will be boring and unnoticed by many. That's why authors must work diligently to create characters with vivid and correct personalities to suit their various duties in our books.

Let's talk about a few secondary characters—those creatures who support the protaganist(s) and antagonist(s). In my newest book: Catch Me If You Can, Book one of the Nursery Rhyme series, I have two I want to use as examples.

I love creating secondary characters in books. They seem to add a touch of spice to the whole story. For instance:

  • Take Jimbo: He's a Native American of the tribe of Blackfoot, intuitive, kind, knowledgeable of the area and of reading trail signs plus a good nature endears him to readers. I didn't make him weird or unworldly, but with an innate personality that knows his own mind and isn't threatened
    by anyone.

How does that affect the readers? They love him: his deep understanding of people, their troubled hearts, their spirituality, their hurt—all of that resonates with them. It makes him a very empathetic individual, one that readers can connect with.

  • And then there's Boet (pronounced Boot): A little background here: when I first wrote Catch Me If You Can, Tara Layne (the protagonist) had a pet mouse given to her by her two brothers as a joke. BUT...when an editor suggested I use a different kind of pet, I went on the hunt for the perfect pet. Once I'd decided on a cat as Tara's pet, I did a lot of research and came across an article about Savannah cats. I was impressed, not only by their behavior and attitudes but that this cat was the perfect pet for her.

And what is the response to Boet from readers? Well, he's one of their favorites. His antics, intelligence, and overall personality win them over.

Secondary characters are vastly important in books. I've found myself caring more about them, sometimes, than I do the main ones. And why's that, you ask?

Because they're not restricted in behaving in a way that leads to results. They can be as quirky or hateful as you portray them, and people will still love them because of that distinct difference.

Think about it. Who doesn't love a cat who leaves perfectly good clues for their detective and then nonchalantly walks away? He's done his job, now it's up to this person to do his. And all the time, he's gaining the attention of readers who wish he belonged to them. As is his right.

Smart cat! Fascinating characters!

Serious Wednesday: Introducing BOET!

BOET

*  A major character in the book series:

The Nursery Rhyme Books

*  He's a SAVANNAH cat.

*  A Savannah cat is bred between a domestic cat and an African Serval cat.

* Savannah cats are rated between F1 and F5. The F stands for filial (how many generations removed from the Serval cat that cat is). You cannot own an F1 without a Dangerous Wild Life Animal license.

The higher the number, the more gentle they are.

Savannah cats are extremely loyal. Raised in a household with children or other people help to make them very socialized.

* Savannah cats like to cuddle, play ball, and sometimes even swim!

*  They are extremely smart (hence Boet's intelligence in this series!)

* They can weigh anywhere from 15 lbs to 25-some lbs. The largest Savannah cat--19 inches tall--in the world lives in Michigan. First generations are usually larger than later ones.

*AND they are expensive. Some can run as high as 30 some thousand.

Serious Wednesday: Introducing: Catch Me If You Can

 Catch Me If You Can

Book ONE of

The Nursery Rhyme series

The big cat sat on the oversized rock, ears pointed toward the sky, every muscle taut, every sense at the ready.

“S-s-shut up and f-f-forget it. You've s-seen nothing and know nothing. I won't warn you again. G-g-got it?”

The cat's head swiveled, his ears twitching as if catching the hint of threat in the whisper. A soft hiss slid from his open mouth and reinforced the overtone of evil pressing in upon the scene. Within hours, lies and dark secrets are slithering all over the campground.

Coaxed into finding the animal killer at Jamieson's Outfitters, Tara Layne, with her sidekick, Boet, is welcomed by a threatening whisper and the unfriendly eyes of a rugged and devastatingly handsome manager. Wesley Clarke, both interesting and frustrating, holds an attraction for Tara that is both primitive and exasperating.

Intermingled with her search, Tara deals with her own heartbreaking buried secrets. When a strange old Native American probes into the recesses of her heart, he encourages her to face her bitter feelings.

As Tara closes in on her search, she finds herself—and Boet—the target of someone who's determined to outrun and outsmart her. Someone determined not to get caught.

His theme:

Fun as fast as you can, you can't catch me.

The question:

Can Tara run fast enough to catch this real live Gingerbread boy

before he decides to get rid of her and Boet?

Serious Wednesday: How We All Met

How We All Met

How hubby and I met, and how Ryle and Jazzi met couldn't be farther apart.

For hubby and I...
I was a church girl and had been for quite a few of my young years. When the church I attended was having special services, quite a few teens and young adults were attending, and one night something special happened. Two new young adults walked in. I didn't pay much attention to the young lady, but the man—oh, my. He was strong-looking, athletic, polite and extremely good-looking. He caught my attention, and I guess, I must have caught his.

Two of the younger ones I worked with in church decided to chime in. Immediately after the service completed, they made it their mission to go after that young man and ask him a few questions. When he confessed (in front of the young lady he was with) that he liked me, they giggled and ran straight to me. (And they still proclaim, to this day, that they were the ones who brought us together!)

The rest of the story after that ended up with us falling in love and getting married.

Our happily ever after.

As for Ryle Sadler and Jazmine (Jazzi) Sanderson...

They met in Book Four of the Appleton, WV Romantic Mystery series when Ryle served as a casual escort for Jazzi (at the request of Jazzi's sister). But in Book Five, Ryle has an unusual happening that encouraged and outright seemed to compel him to invite Jazzi to work with him on a new project. Involved in their work, working together to find the mystery beneath the place, they find similar ground that leads to their romance.

With Ryle, it's realizing that he's found the person—not just a person who was a compatible work partner, but someone who was tender-hearted, sweet and the perfect person for him.

And for Jazzi, Ryle was an example of growing faith and strength that she severely needed. His trust in her to do the right thing was the exact action that gave her the determination to do just that.

Ryle, who never thought a small town like Appleton, and Jazzi, who'd run away from the place years before, realized that Appleton was a place they could call home. A place filled with loyal friends, a peaceful place that both of them craved, and a place where love was to be found.

Two tales of romance building. One real and one make-believe, but, both very satisfying.

Serious Wednesday: Contemplating Writing When You Don't Know Where to Go.

I visited Gail Sattler's Blog this past week and shared how hard it was for me to plot the book.

Here's the link if you'd like to check it out:

https://www.gailkittleson.com/the-spies-of-world-war-ii/#comment-532758

Books one and two came as if it was nothing...just there.

But book three?

A bit harder.

I had to work at it.

I had to revise, rethink, rewrite before I could get it where I wanted it to go.

I knew who the two main protagonists were...pretty much.

But the secondary characters?

They were difficult, hiding from me as if they were keeping their personalities, their reason for even being in the book hidden. I had to WORK at finding their information.

But as I always encourage beginning writers to do...

Never, never, never give up.

Keep writing even you feel what you've written is horrible.

Even when you feel you're mentally dead.

Even when you want to.

Keep writing.

Keep winning.

And the results will be there.

Happy writing!

Serious Wednesday: The Launch is Over!

It's been a hectic few weeks, or should I say months, preparing for the release of my newest novel:

Sing Until You Die, Book 3 of The Spies of WWII series.

As I read and enjoyed the responses from the attendees at the Book Party last night, I appreciated those who attended, those who support and love my books, appreciated their enthusiasm and their love of reading.

Authors may pen their thoughts, their ideas and creations, but without readers?

So thank you, readers and lovers of fiction books! You are worth your weight in gold, and I, for one appreciate your patronage and support!

God bless!

Rambling Friday: Sharing Today

I thought I'd share a bit about my latest novel:

Caleb's Destiny

Blurb:

Mr. Michael, Destiny Rose McCulloch, and Hunter have a mysterious history. Why were three fathers, all business partners, murdered under suspicious circumstances while on their quest to find gold?

Hunter, who is Mr. Michael's ranch manager, is determined to find the answers and protect the precocious young lady who he suspects holds a key answer to his questions.

Mr. Michael wants only to be left alone to attend to his property, but what can he do when Destiny refuses to leave and captures the heart of everyone of his employees?

Destiny almost forgets her quest when she falls in love with Mr. Michael's ranch and all the people there. And then Mr. Michael is much too alluring to ignore. The preacher man back east where she took her schooling tried to claim her heart, but the longer she stays the less she can remember him. She only came west to find a little boy she knew years ago. A little boy all grown up by now...unless, of course, he's dead.

Tell me, do you or anyone you know enjoy westerns, whether it's books, dramas or whatever?

Happy Reading!

These two damaged, rebellious people learn the hard way
that leaning on God instead of their own selves and abilities
is the only true way to love and happiness.

READ the First Chapter:

Chapter One
1942
Jerry Patterson stared out the yawning black hole in the side of the plane. Seconds to go before he dropped. Night time parachuting was always a risky thing, but the pilot was one of the best who’d keep this baby right on target, lessening the chances he’d have to hit water. Trees were another matter, but with any kind of luck, the landing would go smooth.
Then to meet his contact and move into the German military high life. His pulse revved up. It was a dangerous game he was about to play.
Josie’s face flashed in his mind, and Jerry felt his heart soften. How he loved his tomboy wife. She was a beautiful butterfly dancing on ice, but put her in a social setting, and she was like a wild creature let lose in a maiden aunt’s prim parlor.
Three weeks of marital bliss. It’d been heaven on earth for him. One rapturous day—and night—after another. She’d cried the night before he’d left, but had been strength personified when he’d boarded the train the next morning.
If—no, when—he got home, he’d wrap his arms around her and not let her out of his sight.
Jerry stepped into the hole and dropped rapidly, counting. One thousand...One thousand one...One thousand two... With a jerk he pulled, the parachute opened above him, and he drifted earthward toward his assignment.

Author Beth Ziarnick Visits

Welcome, fellow author, Beth Ziarmick! I'm happy to have Beth visiting today and sharing a little about her writing life. Enjoy reading her answers below and be sure to check out her book!

BIO
A long-time fan of romantic suspense, Beth Ann Ziarnik hosts a Web site for readers and writers of romantic
suspense. Her debut novel, Her Deadly Inheritance, won her the "Writer of the Year" award at the 2016 Write-to-Publish Conference.

Beth is co-founder of Word & Pen Christian Writers and a member of American Christian Fiction Writers. She lives in Northeastern Wisconsin.

How do you spend your writing days?  Do you set goals to reach a certain number of words per day?  Can you give us a general idea of how long it takes you to write a novel?
How I wish! No certain number of words or pages a day. I just write most days until I finish the manuscript. At some point, I run my chapters through my two critique groups. One is online through American Christian Fiction Writers. The other is a local group through Word & Pen Christian Writers.

How long does it take me to write a novel?
I’m still trying to figure that out. I had years to learn how to write a publishable novel, tweaking my first one while I was being published in nonfiction..

Based on the sequel to Her Deadly Inheritance which I finished this year, my guess is that it takes me about a year to write a novel.

What is the spiritual message in your latest book?  What can readers expect to get from reading it?
Her Deadly Inheritance is my first and latest published novel. Its spiritual message is one of trusting God despite a loved one’s untimely death. This is why I chose the following verse to express that: “The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and I am helped.~ Psalm 28:7, New International Version.

But my story’s hero, Clay Merrick, expresses it in another way in one of the story’s last paragraphs: “No matter what happens or how bad things might look, we can trust God to make it come out all right. At the right time and in the right way.” Throughout the story, he had enormous challenges before he came to that conclusion, especially when it looked as if he would lose everything that mattered most to him.

You recently had your first novel published.  Would you take this time to describe it to us?  How and where can readers buy it?
Her Deadly Inheritance is a romantic suspense. My heroine, Jill Ashley Shepherd, ran away from home a few years before the story opens, letting her family believe she was dead. Because she pays a dear price for that choice, in her suffering she turns to Christ. Several months later, she returns to her estranged family to make things right—and steps into a deadly trap. Of course, she also meets an amazing man with problems of his own …

Readers insist they love the novel’s characters and story. It’s available through Amazon (https://amzn.com/e/B0196VHC7C), Lighthouse Publishing of the Carolinas, and Barnes & Noble.

Where do you get character names?  Do you find your characters similar to you in any way?
I hate to admit it, but my characters tend to name themselves! I own lots of baby name books, but all they do is confirm that each of my characters has the right name. I know this sounds silly, but it’s just the way it goes in my writing life.

My characters do tend to share some similar interests and ways of looking at or handling challenges—but only in bits and pieces. They are definitely themselves

Do you ever feel like giving up?  Most people don’t understand the stress, the work, and the joy of being a writer.  How tenuous becoming a writer is. Do you care to share how it feels, what discouraging/encouraging times you’ve gone through?
Do I ever feel like giving up? Oh, my goodness, yes! I’ve hit that wall several times—and then talked myself out of giving in to it. There’s that old saying, “Winners never quit, and quitters never win.” So true! While I struggled to write Her Deadly Inheritance and tweak it to a publishable level, I heard friends and instructors who were published novelists say again and again, “Don’t quit! Your breakthrough could be just around the corner.” I hung in there, and they were right.

Actually, I’m currently sharing that journey in a series of posts at https://bethziarnik.wordpress.com. Ah, yes, “The Fear,” “The Frustration,” etc. But, you know, it’s worth it all. When a reader tells me what my novel has meant to him or her, I’m amazed. I’m also immensely grateful to God because I know I couldn’t do this without him and the support of my faithful prayer team.

Would you explain how you “chose” (or was chosen by) a publisher? Now, that you’re published, can you sit back and relax from the success you’ve experienced?
As for being chosen by Lighthouse Publishing of the Carolinas, I have to thank my years at the Write-to-Publish Conference—and my agent, Jim Hart of Hartline Literary Agency. I learned my novel writing skills at Write-to-Publish. I also met Eddie Jones who owns Lighthouse and my managing editor, Rowena Kuo, at Write-to-Publish. This was before Jim Hart came on the scene.

Jim loved my novel and believed in me. Once I signed a contract with him, it took 16 months to find a publisher. Then on December 8, 2014, Ro sent Jim a contract offer for Her Deadly Inheritance. I signed it on December 11. A little more than a year later, I held my debut novel in my hands.

Sit back and relax now? Yikes, no! These days, I’m twice as busy—promoting one novel and getting the next ready for publication. Just this Friday, I finished writing the sequel to Her Deadly Inheritance. 2017 will be filled with continuing promotions for the first novel, edits and other preparations for the second novel, and the writing of the third novel.

REVIEW from the Wakulla Prison . . .

In one of the writing and promoting groups (John 3:16) I'm with,
we have a prison ministry of sending our books to the inmates
at the Wakulla Prison in Florida.
This inmates read the books and write reviews on them.

I recently send two of mine to our coordinator to forward on to them.
Here's the first review I received on my book:
With Music in Their Hearts.
It's the first book in my WWII Spies trilogy.

I was delighted with the review,
not just because of the praise,
but because the book seemed to touch Lon's heart,
and after all,
that's one reason I write!

Read on . . .

With Music in Their Hearts by Carole Brown
Review from Lon

This book has it all - romance, mystery, music, history and intrigue! A very well written story that transport me to the 1940s. The characters are amazing and mysterious. Carole Brown is a master storyteller. The plot was excellent and kept me guessing right u to the end.

The blending of such a diverse cast was wonderfully done. As I read, my feel for them bounced from joy, to sadness, to anger, to confusion, to compassion and empathy. So many surprises, and it got better as the story progressed. The cast of characters was very real and believable. I recommend this book to anyone.

To me, the most profound thing was Emma Jaine’s learning to trust God in very difficult situations. It touched me to watch her developing trust in God, and overcome her skepticism and doubt. A very inspiring character, Emma Jaine’s recognition that she needed God’s help to truly love and understand her family and to love others.

May you be as blest as I was in reading this review!
Blessings

A Visit from One of my Favorite Authors! Welcome, Sharon Lavy

I'm thrilled to have my dear friend Sharon Lavy with me today to share a little of her writing journey with you! PLEASE be sure to comment and leave your email addy for a chance to win her book! Now on to her story:

What is the genre you write in?  Would you explain what it is?
I call it women’s fiction because I care about relationships between women, and families. Romance is a part of life and I include it in my stories  but it is not intended to be the sole focus of the book.

Other’s call my writing German Baptist fiction which would be a sub-genre to Amish fiction.

What is the spiritual message in Farewell For A While?  What can readers expect to get from reading it?
We need to search for God’s will and not our own. We have to give up some of our pre-conceived ideas to serve him. And most importantly of all…God wants to have a personal relationship with each and every one of us.

Very true! You recently had another book published. Would you take this time to describe it to us?
I am not sure our readers will really be interested in this one. But since you ask I will tell you. At least it’s one way to make sure all my interviews are not carbon copies. Giggle!

This one is non-fiction. OLD GERMAN BAPTIST DRESS PATTERN… Drafting and fitting.

I’ve had some sisters from a conservative Christian facebook group tell me I should make stock dresses to sell on Etsy.com or something. So Not Happening!  (CB: giggle!)

But I’ve made dress patterns for the sisters in our community for years. Along the way I developed a technique to take measurements and by using the charts I had created, I could make a dress pattern from scratch, not just alter a readymade one.

Of course all bodies are not created equal…and our bodies also shift as the years pass. (CB: love this explanation. :)) So while some fit perfectly the first time, others needed tweaking. I took note as I learned “what those lines mean” and how to correct them.

One thing led to another and I had requests to teach others. This was twenty years ago and I was thankful for desktop publishing. Husband bought me a punch and bind machine and I built the book Drafting The Old German Baptist Dress Pattern including all the charts and instructions I used for drafting patterns.

The only problem was. I used a lot of graphics and my computer continually locked up. So the simple handmade book had to be divided into 14 files.

I kept having sisters want a copy of the book. And I kept saying I really should update the files. The sisters would give me their phone number for when I had the book ready. Sigh.

Well, about a month ago another sister called me. And I said “Yeah, I really need to find those files (by then I wasn’t even sure I still had them on my newer computer) She wanted to give me her phone number. I wrote it down and went back to working on the latest manuscript.

Guess what? My characters would not cooperate.

So I searched the computer found the files in Word Perfect. Tried to convert them to Word with no luck. So it was a painstaking process and I told my husband if I had realized how long it would take to convert and update those files I would have just said I no longer have the book, because in reality I didn’t have a sharable one. And it was a lot of work for a very small nitch audience.

But then, why do I write anyway? To share what God has given me. Even if it helps only one person.

Finally, the book was finished and printed. And my characters have stopped the silent treatment.

Whew, a lot of work. What are you working on now?
I am working on book three of the Sometimes We’re Asked to Forgive the Unforgivable Series. The title is Forgiving the Unforgivable. As with all my novels I find myself learning lessons right along with my characters.

I've loved the first two and eagerly await this one. How and where can readers buy your books?
My Paperback books are available online at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Books A Million.
The ebooks are exclusive to Kindle and are available on Amazon.
